Muffy is a collaboration between Kate Citrin and Dox Oner, a street artist whose crew runs on the South side of Chicago. Dox tagged Kate’s painting of a famed North side Chicago drag queen, Muffy Fishbasket with the word, “Fop.”
A fop is defined as, “a male concerned with their appearance or clothing.” Fop, despite its innocuous definition, is both a slur in the referenced Victorian era and the actual time in place, 2025, bringing very real violence to men challenging gender norms. Muffy hosts drag brunches, Bingo at the local brewery, and generally brings unstoppable joy wherever she goes. Why would a male concerned with appearance be a threat to American culture? As we battle the poisonous notion that drag queens are groomers it begs the question, are we are STILL having this conversation?
